A Richland County jury convicted Michael Andre Harper of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime on Aug. 13.

The Honorable Heath Taylor sentenced Harper to five years for possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and a term of life imprisonment for murder. The sentences will run concurrently.

On July 30, 2024, Harper went to Jimmy’s Auto Repair to confront owner Henry Durugbor over selling him a defective truck. Video surveillance showed Harper damaging another vehicle on Durugbor’s property before the two engaged in a brief argument.

Harper then drew his firearm and shot Durugbor once in the upper body. After standing over Durugbor, Harper shot him three more times.

Video surveillance also showed Harper attempting to cover up any evidence he may have left behind before leaving the auto repair shop and disposing of the firearm.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) responded after Durugbor’s body was discovered on July 31, 2024. Harper was found later that day and ultimately confessed to shooting and killing Durugbor.

Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office Assistant Solicitors Joseph Kreush and Gabrielle Sharp prosecuted the case. Former RCSD Investigator Jason Cuzzupe, RCSD Investigator Elise Ambos, and RCSD Sgt. Kristopher Kneece led the investigation.
