Kershaw County man sentenced to 24 years for methamphetamine trafficking, other charges

On July 24, Nakia Shelton Brunson pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking methamphetamine, second offense, distribution of methamphetamine near a school, and two counts of throwing bodily fluids on a law enforcement officer. The Honorable T.W. McGee sentenced Brunson to 24 years in SCDC for the trafficking charge, 10 years in SCDC for distribution of methamphetamine near a school, and five years for each count of throwing bodily fluids, with all sentences to run concurrently.
The court heard evidence that the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit conducted a surveillance operation at the Park View Inn in Camden following reported narcotics sales. After narcotics agents observed Brunson and his accomplice make multiple sales, the unit executed a search warrant on May 31, 2024.
During the search, agents found Brunson in possession of 23.8 grams of methamphetamine, as well as cocaine, crack, various prescription narcotics, and marijuana. Investigators also found equipment and materials used to convert cocaine into crack and paraphernalia used for the sale or distribution of narcotics.
Brunson had a prior conviction for trafficking methamphetamine and was well-known to law enforcement as a narcotics dealer.
The court also heard evidence that Brunson spat in the face of a Camden Police Officer after another arrest on Jan. 1, 2023, and later spat in the face of a member of the Kershaw County Detention Center staff while awaiting trial on Aug. 8, 2025.
Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office Assistant Solicitor Michael Bradbury prosecuted the case. Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Lee Young and the narcotics unit led the investigation.
