Columbia man sentenced to 25 years for killing roommate
April 28, 2026
A Richland County jury convicted Stanley Geter of voluntary manslaughter for the killing of Dexter Gunter on April 22. The Honorable William McGee sentenced Geter to 25 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
On Dec. 27, 2020, Geter repeatedly punched his roommate, Gunter, while he was asleep. Evidence showed Geter mistakenly believed Gunter was having an affair with his girlfriend. After the attack, Gunter was taken to the hospital, where medical staff attempted life-saving measures.
Gunter died Jan. 17, 2021, from blunt-force head trauma.
Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office Senior Assistant Solicitor C. Dale Scott and Assistant Solicitor Joseph Kreush prosecuted the case. Richland County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Scott Morris led the investigation.
