Scottie Strong pleaded guilty to failure to stop for a blue light, resulting in death, reckless homicide, and failure to stop for a blue light, great bodily injury on Dec. 15. The Honorable Jocelyn Newman sentenced Strong to 14 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
On the evening of Jan. 19, 2022, a Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputy observed Strong driving over the speed limit at the intersection of Two Notch Road and Sparkleberry Lane. Strong also ignored a traffic control device, prompting the deputy to initiate a traffic stop by activating blue lights.
Strong accelerated to evade law enforcement and ran a red light at the intersection of Two Notch Road and North Brickyard Road. Strong then collided with a vehicle making a left turn from Two Notch Road onto North Brickyard Road.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team determined Strong reached 138 mph before the crash. Strong’s vehicle completely ripped the victim’s car in half, killing the victim instantly.
A third crash involved a vehicle carrying four victims. As a result, one victim suffered a brain bleed, a fractured skull, and a fractured arm.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested Strong at the scene.
The Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office prosecuted the case, with Assistant Solicitors Paul Walton and Carter Potts leading the prosecution.
