On May 15, a Richland County jury found Breonte Glasgow guilty of homicide by child abuse for the death of her son, Johan Gantt, and two counts of unlawful neglect of a child for two of her other children. The Honorable Thomas W. McGee, III, sentenced the defendant to 45 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

On March 11, 2023, dispatchers sent the Columbia Fire Department and Richland County Emergency Services (EMS) to the defendant’s home, where they found eight-month-old Johan Gantt unresponsive. EMS workers attempted to resuscitate Johan, eventually transporting him to the hospital, where doctors were unable to save him. An autopsy revealed numerous injuries, including five broken bones, a brain injury, extreme malnourishment, and various other visible injuries.

During the investigation into Johan’s death, investigators discovered that the defendant was the sole caregiver of the children. Upon seizing the defendant’s phone, law enforcement found a deleted video of the deceased child from two months earlier. The 18-minute video depicted the defendant taunting the eight-month-old in the bathtub and making crass statements regarding bodily injuries and his excessive crying.

In a previous hearing, Glasgow testified that she discovered the child dead two hours before calling 911 and stated that she did not observe any injuries to her son.

In addition to Johan, the defendant had two other children in the home who were severely malnourished and required medical attention. Those children are now happy and thriving in another placement.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Christopher Mastrianni and Inv. Kelly Smith conducted the investigation. The Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, represented by Deputy Solicitor Anna Browder, Senior Assistant Solicitor Kathryn Cavanaugh, and Assistant Solicitor Morgan Monroe, prosecuted the case.
